2008 Canton Kids Olympics
Written by Stephanie Rothrauff
Monday, 12 May 2008

These are exciting times to be part of the Canton Jaycees!  The Jaycees have been influential in the Canton Community in many ways including our annual Easter Egg Hunt, Christmas Shopping Tour, and Holiday Food Baskets to help underprivileged kids and families in need in the Canton area.  With many new, enthusiastic members we have decided to bring another event to the community!

With the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China this August, this was a great year for the Canton Jaycees to host its first Kids Olympics.  The event will be held at the Stadium Park, 12th Street NW on June 28th from 1 - 4pm. These Olympic events are for children ages 6-12.  All children must be supervised by their parents during the event.

The Canton Kids Olympics will focus on the Olympic games, teaching kids how to play various sports, and the importance of being fit and physically active.  The games will focus on teamwork and good sportsmanship and will be managed by Jaycee members and volunteers from the community.  Some of the games planned include a soccer shootout, baseball toss, fitness challenge, 50/100 yard dash and much more!  The children will also be able to flourish their creative side by designing and making their own Olympic medals.  Kids can also take part in a scavenger hunt around the park and learn about nutrition and other local organizations.

As if this isn't exciting enough, the Canton Jaycees will welcome Olympic gold medalist, Ashley Whitney, from the 1996 Summer Olympics, Atlanta games.  Ashley continues to compete in triathlons and works with children everyday as a swim coach. She has offered her time to appear and talk to kids about her experiences and share her medal.

Join us on to kick off this exciting event Saturday, June 28th.Contact Lynsey ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) or Stephanie ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) if you are interested in helping out.

HAPPY TAILS 2008
Written by Victoria Perkins
Monday, 14 January 2008

The Canton Jaycees are excited to be continuing our Happy Tails Animal Shelter Assist Project in 2008.  This year we will be working with Stark County Humane Society's volunteer coordinator to find ways of expanding this project beyond just monthly visits.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with this project, the Jaycees visit the Stark County Humane Society one Saturday afternoon each month and help out with the animals.  Different ways of helping out during the visits range from "light duty" tasks (e.g., walking the dogs and/or petting and grooming the cats) to "dirty work" (e.g., cleaning cat cages and/or bathing dogs).  Volunteers are encouraged to participate in whatever way(s) are most enjoyable to them...if you don't want to bathe dogs, we won't make you, and if you don't want to change cat litter, we won't make you do that, either!  It's absolutely fine with us if you want to walk dogs or groom cats, and you are free to stay as long or as little as you like.

Each volunteer is also asked to bring one donation item from the shelter's wishlist (viewable at www.starkhumane.org) when they report to the shelter.  Most of these items are available for great prices at our local dollar stores.  SCHS is always in need of newspapers for cat litter, so if you've got a stack of old papers you need to get rid of, bring 'em with you --  help the environment and the shelter!  Those of you visiting SCHS for the first time will also be required to fill out the shelter's waiver form, which is downloadable at www.starkhumane.org or available at the SCHS front desk.

Children are always welcome at Happy Tails events
, but anyone under the age of 16 must have a parent/guardian with them at all times during the event.  Parents/guardians of minors must also fill out the SCHS waiver form, which is downloadable at www.starkhumane.org and also available at the front desk of the Humane Society.

Listed below is a schedule of 2008 visits.  Please mark your calendars and datebooks!  Reminders will be emailed each month,  approximately one week before the actual visits.  We need to keep track of all volunteers -- when you receive your reminders, please let Tori know if you plan on attending at that time (you DO NOT need to let her know if you DO NOT  plan on attending, unless you are fond of doing so Wink).

The donation drive associated with this project has been rescheduled for September 27th.  The committee will be solidified by July 31st, and planning will begin then as well --  it's never too early to start thinking about becoming a donation drive committee member!  We need your help on this one;  if we don't get enough committee volunteers, the drive will be canceled.

Please email Tori ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) if you have any questions or need more information!

You can also visit the photo albums at www.cantonjaycees.org to see pictures from some of last year's visits and watch for new photos of all the fun we'll be having this year!

Wine Social Recap  ~ The Jaycees March Wine Social on March 16 was a great success!  Former Jaycees President Clint Zollinger opened his house to about 20 Jaycees for an evening of conversation, good wine and yummy hors d'oeuvres.  Everyone brought a bottle and we had a wide variety to sample from.  The evening was a hit, so stay tuned for another one in the fall.
Ucoming Social Event at  Fedeli's  ~
Join us at Fedeli’s Bar Down-under, where the in-crowd meets for top-shelf good times and the cocktails flow as easily as the conversation.  Friday, April 20th we will meet at the Fedeli's Bar at 7:30pm.  Jazz music begins at 8pm.  The bar provides a sleek and trendy atmosphere geared toward couples, singles, and business clientele, and is the place to be seen.
